Oh! December

December has arrived, and with it comes a special kind of magic that you can feel the moment you walk into our building. The halls are buzzing with anticipation, laughter, and unmistakable sparkle of children who know the holidays are just around the corner. Their excitement is contagious in the very best way!

As we move through this busy and joy-filled month, I want to encourage you to pause and catch a bit of the "kid bug" of the season. Let yourself soak in their wonder, their eagerness, and their pure belief in all things possible. It's a beautiful reminder of why this time of year means so much, and why the work we do together matters. It's never about the "things", but how we spend the time we have together.

Wishing you moments of joy, connection, and childlike excitement all month long!

Student Achievement Reporting

We are proud to share that we continue to make strong academic growth and ranks in the top quartile of all Boone County Elementary Schools. Even more exciting, New Haven has the highest overall achievement of all elementary schools again this year. While KSA results are not the "everything", they are one example of the meaningful work happening every day in our classrooms. The true measure of success is the growth we see from fall to spring, in academics, confidence, resilience, and personal development. This progress is the result of our high expectations, the dedication and expertise of our seasoned educators, and the hard work of our incredible students.

We also know that student achievement is a partnership. Parents are a child's first and most important teachers, and the support, routines, and encouragement you provide at home lay the foundation for success long before the school day begins. All the learning we want for students cannot occur in school alone, your engagement and partnership help propel them forward in every way.

I have included information about our achievement as a school on the Kentucky Summative Assessment from the 2024-2025 school year. (3rd-5th grades)

Inclement Weather Policy

Our district sent an email and all call out regarding the inclement weather policy, but I wanted to share that information again for those that may have missed it.

Unpredictable winter weather may necessitate Boone County Schools to alter daily schedules or routines within the district.  To be prepared, please log into your Parent Portal to make sure your emergency contact information is correct and up to date.  This is how we will contact you.  Also, have child-care arrangements already in place should the need arise to close school early, delay or cancel school.

Decision process

Boone County Schools have a great team working tirelessly to make decisions on closing or delaying school, always keeping the safety of our students as the top priority.  As early as 3:00 a.m., if snow, freezing rain, sleet or other dangerous precipitation presents our Assistant Superintendent for Operations set out to inspect the road conditions. They drive designated routes, checking the roadways that are typically the most dangerous when snow covered.  The team considers safe travel not only on streets but sidewalks, parking lots, and  driveways.  Other conditions to consider include the outside temperature, wind chill factor and the amount of precipitation fallen or falling. The Assistant Superintendent for Operations contacts the county public works department to check on road clearing progress.  Once enough information is gathered and shared with the Superintendent the team focuses on one question:  Would you feel safe transporting students in a school bus in the current or predicted conditions?

Whenever travel is affected by winter weather the District has four choices:

* Cancel school

* Delay opening

* Early dismissal

* Open on schedule

The team attempts to make a decision by 5:00 a.m. There are times when a decision is not clear-cut, for instance in cases of a snow storm happening right at the time of assessment.

Getting the word out

Once a decision is made, the notification process begins.  We get the word out as quickly as possible, through our phone notification system, news media outlets, district social media outlets and the district’s webpage. Since the phone system has thousands of households to call, it can take 45 minutes to an hour for all the messages to go out. Please note that this information is general in nature and you should always refer to your child's school protocol for school closings and delays.

In the meantime, visit the following to check the district’s status:

•     Website:     www.boone.kyschools.us

•     Facebook:   www.facebook.com/TheBooneCountySchools

•     X ( Formerly Twitter):       @Boone_County and @BCSWx

If school is canceled:

Schools will not be open for regular business.

All afternoon and evening activities, including night school, are canceled as well. However, if conditions improve and after-school activities can safely be held, an announcement will be made.

If school is delayed:

All schools start either one or two hours later than normal. Buses may run their regular routes or an altered route depending on weather and road conditions at the time; just add one or two hours to the regularly scheduled pick up times depending on the length of the delay.

School dismissal times remain the same, and afternoon and evening activities continue as usual unless weather conditions deteriorate throughout the day.

Decisions about making up the time missed will be made on a case-by-case basis in accordance with state guidelines.

If schools dismiss early:

The decision will be made as early as possible to allow families time to make arrangements.

Children in the morning preschool sessions who ride the bus will be taken home at the regular time, and afternoon preschool sessions are canceled.

Decisions about making up the time missed will be made on a case-by-case basis in accordance with state guidelines.

Although students may get excited for an unanticipated day off from school, they will have to make up missed days before school ends for the year.  However, the Board of Education does have the authority to adjust the school year calendar by reducing student days as long as the calendar meets all KDE requirements for attendance.

The Boone County Schools will always make decisions to ensure the safety of our students and staff to the best of our ability.

Bringing back the "Old School Holiday Shop"

I can remember when I was in elementary school shopping for my parents at our holiday shop, and I still have the keychain and crystal angel my kids bought me when they were in elementary! :) There is something very exciting and special during this time when the kids take ownership for picking out something very special for their family for Christmas. They are so unbelievably proud and excited to be able to do this for the ones they love. It really is a gift to us as well, when we get to help them with this experience.

Our parents in the PTO have worked hard behind the scenes to get this organized, delivered, and set up for our kids. They have scouted (and maybe begged) for volunteers and I believe we are in good shape. Next week, our students will go to the holiday shop during their library time (**) where they can shop for those on their "list". A letter and envelope were sent home with every single child, and information was emailed to all guardians. All information was communicated thoroughly.

Items range from $1 - $20 and students will shop for those who are on their list with a shopping helper. PLEASE send exact change as there will not be change given back. That has been communicated on all forms. Any change left over will go to supporting those that do not have funds to shop.

On Friday, December 12th from 4:30 to 6:30, our Holiday shop will be open for purchase until items are gone. You can bring younger siblings to shop at this time if you would like.

** If there is an inclement weather day- library days will shift days. We will work to schedule missed classes into the schedule.

Mrs. Brentlinger's 2nd grade class (because they are the 6th class in a 5 day rotation) will shop on Friday from 12:25 to 1:25.

Mrs. Hall (3rd grade has a field trip Friday) will be divided among the week.

Parent Corner: Neuro-Divergence Resources

There are many different diagnosis names, whether it's referred to as Neuro-divergence, ADD, or ADHD, etc. we are seeing many more students with this diagnosis then ever before. We are changing and adapting as a profession to present information in a manner that support a variety of learners, but there are things that everyone can do to help our children use tools to manage this. It is something that they will have to manage so that they can be productive adults.

Below is a link to some really good information and resources about what it is, the behaviors, learning obstacles, executive function deficits, frustration intolerance, and co-existing conditions. There are also a variety of tips to improve these behaviors- "Go-to" strategies that can help support our students. Our staff uses these in conjunction with other research based structures to support all of our learners.

Boone County Schools School Choice / Open Enrollment Tab

If you attend New Haven through School Choice you are required to reapply each new school year. That window is open from November 15th through January 15th. Specific information was shared about the process in the October Newsletter, and individual emails were sent out to each family that this pertains to. If you miss the window to apply your application will not be considered for renewal. Per the requirements, attendance, grades, and behavior will be reviewed prior to approval consideration. The link is provided above to re-apply. If you have any questions about the process you can reach out to Mrs. Goble. mary.goble@boone.kyschools.us

NO SHAVE NOVEMBER:
Supporting our Community

Thank you to our community and staff! Deputy Duncan joined the FPD in this great cause this year, and their overall goal as a police department was $2500. New Haven alone raised about $3200 for childhood cancer research and care!!!! The Florence PD was BLOWN away by our generosity.

On behalf of Deputy Duncan and myself, THANK YOU. I can't tell you how proud we are to be a part of such a giving and compassionate community.
