Falling into October :)

October is such an exciting month at New Haven. The cooler weather, colorful leaves, and festive energy iof the next few holiday months bring a renewed sense of focus and fun to our classrooms! Students have settled into their routines, friendships are growing stronger, and learning is in full swing. From engaging lessons and creative projects to upcoming family and student events, our halls are buzzing with excitement.

As we move deeper into the semester, we're continuing to celebrate student growth, encourage positive habits, and build strong connections between home and school. Thank you so much for your partnership; it truly makes a difference in the success and happiness of every child.

Parent / Teacher Meetings on the horizon

Communication is the KEY to making sure everyone is on the same page and knows what is going on. In additional to the daily / weekly communication coming from each homeroom, is the scheduled parent/ teacher conferences at the end of the 1st quarter. This is an opportunity for teachers and parents to connect and discuss the academic and social progress of each student. It's also a point in the year where our teachers have had time to make observations and pinpoint areas of acceleration or areas of need, which are important pieces to share with parents. Early intervention is foundational to closing any developmental delays.

Our conference dates are October 23rd and October 28th from 4 to 7. Teachers have sent home sign ups - specifically through the BCS app. PLEASE check the app for that communication. Our goal is to meet with every single New Haven parent in the month of October. As a note to be aware of, because the meetings are scheduled times, it is imperative that families arrive on time and call ahead if you are unable to make it please.

We also want to share that Mrs. Carter, will be hosting open sessions on how to download and use the BCS app if you have not already signed up. If you have any technology questions, this would be a great place to get assistance!

Fall Assessment Data

What Is NWEA MAP Testing?

The NWEA MAP Growth Assessment (Measures of Academic Progress) is an online test that helps teachers understand what your child already knows and what they are ready to learn next.
Unlike traditional tests that measure only grade-level content, MAP adjusts to each student’s responses. When a student answers a question correctly, the next question becomes a little harder; if they miss one, the next becomes a little easier. This creates a personalized testing experience that shows each child’s true instructional level—whether they are performing below, at, or above grade level.

Why Do We Use It?

As professional educators, we use MAP results as a tool for growth and instruction, not a grade. The data helps us:

  • Identify strengths and areas for support in reading and math.

  • Track progress throughout the school year to see how much academic growth each student makes.

  • Set individual goals that are realistic and challenging.

  • Inform small-group instruction and interventions so every child receives the right level of challenge and support.

  • Guide conversations with families about progress and next steps for learning.

How Often Do Students Take It?

Students typically take the MAP test three times a year — in fall, winter, and spring.
This allows us to see how students grow over time and adjust teaching strategies as needed to keep them moving forward.

What Does It Mean for My Child?

MAP testing is one piece of the larger picture we use to understand your child as a learner. It helps us personalize instruction, celebrate growth, and ensure that all students are challenged, supported, and on track to meet Kentucky Academic Standards. Parents in 1-5 have received their student's summary report. (Sent home Sept. 12th) Kindergarten (who took the assessment later to allow for acclimation) will receive their parent reports at conference time.

How does our Fall data look?

Overall, our students came back to school ready to learn! We are very please with our schoolwide data, as it has given us a good understanding of schoolwide needs, grade level starting points, and individual strengths and needed focal points.

Anxious Generation Community Book Talk

Raising kids today looks very different than it did just a decade ago. Between constant screen access, social media pressures, and fewer real-world connections, our children are growing up in a world that can feel overwhelming. The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt explores how these changes have affected kids’ mental health, confidence, and overall well-being, and what families, schools, and communities can do to help them thrive again.

New Haven Elementary is proud to host a Community Book Talk centered on The Anxious Generation. This was born from a conversation with many of our parents at at Family Resource meeting and has taken on it's own form! This event brings together parents, educators, and community members for honest conversation about the challenges our kids face and the small, meaningful steps we can take together to support them. We are learning from the author, Dr. Haidt, parents, and other professionals.

We are sharing key takeaways from the book, looking at current trends impacting children, and discussing practical strategies for building healthier habits around technology, play, and connection. Whether you’ve read the book or are just curious to learn more, everyone is welcome! We had our 1st discussion on October 7th and it went really well. We would love to have more families interested in how to create a better, safer future for our kids to join. You can come to 1 event or all 4; it's open to all.

Together, we can combat the obstacles our children are facing and ensure they grow up feeling safe, connected, and confident.

Break the Mold winner for October

The Board of Education is recognizing Mr. Tony Horton, as the October "Break the Mold" winner for our district. Mr. Tony has been at New Haven for 19 years as serves as our Head Custodian, leading a team of 4 others. He is loved by all, and is always poking fun with our kids. Our custodial team is such a hard working group that take pride in the appearance and care of our building. They take the time to interact and build relationships with our students and staff, while also making sure our building staffs clean and operational. Tony is a blessing to us all and we could not be more proud of him!

We are finding that many of our parents are not connected to the BCS app and are missing pertinent information! This is the main platform for ALL school communication (Elementary through High School). Teachers are sending out information regarding parent conferences through this platform and we don't want you to miss out.

Veteran's Program is right around the corner!

Our Veteran's program is something that is near and dear to all of our hearts. Please see the message from Mrs. Dern below in the honoring of all of our Veterans! We would love for you to join us!

Dear New Haven Families,

We are starting to prepare for Veteran’s Day! Our ceremony will be on Tuesday, November 11th at 9:30am, doors will open at 9:00am after all students are in class. If you have a Veteran you would like to invite, please send a picture via email to heather.dern@boone.kyschools.us. All pictures should also include the Veteran’s name and their branch of service. If your child would like to write a letter to their Veteran or about how special all Veterans are, I have attached writing prompts for them to use. You can send all completed letters to Mrs. Dern.

Parent - Teacher Organization

Parent engagement and community support has been AMAZING this school year! Wow.. to say that New Haven shows up BIG is an understatement!

Our yearly fundraiser has concluded and our community exceeded the goal set for the year, which means some of the kids "dream" items may become a reality this school year.

Our community (business partners and families) raised a total of $48, 719!!! (my mind is blown) House of Creativity brought in the most funds. Mrs. Kay's 1st grade class won the class party for raising the most money out of all the classes. There were a total of 40 FULL Zoos built. Shout out to our top earners: Hayes Spindle, Reid Spindle, and Caroline Reiter!

I am beyond grateful for the support of our school.

What do these funds go to?

The expansion of security graphics on campus doors/ windows. (Coming soon!)

Playground equipment and upgrades for students. (**buddy bench, etc.)

New sealed blacktop and painted areas on the playground.

Assemblies and in-school learning experiences (ex: Cool Critters, Basketball Jones)

New student risers for performances and programs.

Mentoring Education Site: Did you know that New Haven is a collaborative partner with Thomas More University? We have an educational class that happens 1 to 2 times a month at New Haven and then those educational students go in to observe specific strategies and techniques they are learning about. Additionally, we have both TMU and NKU students that come to New Haven to complete practicum hours and get experience in our classrooms. It has been a great working relationship to mentor new educators.
